XV Encuentro Anual

The XV Annual Meeting of the Asociación Sui Iuris took place between the 3rd and 4th of July, 2025, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. The Asociación Sui Iuris is a network of Ibero-American Law Schools and Faculties aimed at promoting student mobilities and academic cooperation between partner institutions.

The meeting began on July 3rd, with an inaugural session chaired by the Director of the Faculty, Professor Eduardo Vera-Cruz Pinto and also included interventions vy Professor Vasco Pereira da Silva (Member of the Board of Directors of Sui Iuris) and Professor Martin Hevia (President of Sui Iuris). In this session, participantes were informed that the program would follow the usual order of Sui Iuris meetings, on the morning of Thursday and Friday, but in the afternoon, following last year’s Miami meeting, there would be joint sessions aimed at fostering the cooperation of Sui Iuris with other academic institutions in Europe and the United States of America, namely ELPIS (European Legal Practice Integrated Studies), SIPE (Societas Iuris Pubblici Europaei) and SEALS (South and Eastern American Law Schools).

This was followed by a discussion about mental health and well-being of Law students, with interventions by Professor Maria Graciela Brantt Zumaran, Professor Raymundo Gama Leyva and Professor Manuel Gómez. Also, during the morning, a panel on online legal education and COILs programs in the post pandemic context took place, with the participation of Professor Naayeli E. Ramírez Espinosa and Professor Gilberto Guerrero Rocca.

During the afternoon the pedagogical experiente of the Global Law Classroom (SEALS and ELPIS initiative) was discussed, with contributions of Professor Melanie Reid, Professor Arndt Künnecke, Professor Marine Toullier and Professor Vasco Pereira da Silva, who moderated the session.

On July 4th, the General Assembly of the Asociación Sui Iuris took place. importante decisions were taken concerning the development of the Sui Iuris and a new direction was elected, chaired by Professor Naayeli E. Ramírez Espinosa.

During the afternoon, a joint Sui Iuris session was held with the ELPIS, SIPE and SEALS networks, on the topic “The Role of the Courts in the Protection of Fundamental Rights and in Guaranteeing the Rule of Law”. Participating in this session were Professor Adriana Ancona de Faria (Sui Iuris), Professor Axel Kämmerer (President of SIPE), Professor Friedrich Germelmann (SIPE and ELPIS), Professor Rui Guerra da Fonseca(SIPE and ELPIS), Professor Francisco Balaguer Callejón (SIPE and ELPIS) and Professor Akram Faizer (SEALS), with the moderation of Professor Vasco Pereira da Silva.

The meeting ended on July 5th with a guided tour of the Museu da Cidade and lunch at the Faculty, accompanied by the Tuna Feminina from the Faculty of Law.
