Professor Russell Weaver (October 24, 1952 – August 11, 2026)

My Dear ELPIS Friends,

I am forced to interrupt your vacation to share the sad news of the passing of our colleague and friend Russ.

Prof. Russell Weaver (Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, University of Louisville)  was a distinguished scholar, a great man, and a very good friend. We will miss him so much at ELPIS, in our universities, and in our hearts. Along with Patrick Hugg, Russell Weaver was one of the first American professors to take an interest in the ELPIS group and participate in its academic activities, as well as to invite ELPIS to the annual SEALS meetings, opening the doors to the present increasing cooperation between american and european academic institutions that is already a reality nowadays.

His passing saddens all who loved him: the many students and colleagues at the American and European (like in Lisbon) universities where he taught; his partners in the many international initiatives he organized and coordinated; and his colleagues in the many international organizations in which he participated (SEALS, ELPIS, ELFA). For my part, I have lost an exceptional colleague, a companion in many “academic adventures,” and a very dear, longtime friend.

It was a loss for ELPIS, and therefore I propose that we dedicate the next issue of the ELPISv-Law Review to the memory of our colleague and friend Russ.
